Mel Gardner was born in 1983 as the first child of Denzil Gardner of Jamaica and Adukwu Nkambi of the Republic of Sudan. Adukwu came to the UK in 1976 as an asylum seeker fleeing the Ebola outbreak in Sudan that year that killed her mother and father and 2 siblings. Settling in Bristol she met Denzil who came to Bristol in 1968 as part of the "Windrush Generation" and married him in 1981. Melford was their first child of 7, and after doing well at school became interested in Microbiology, and specifically Virology and the study of the disease that caused his mother to flee Africa. After finishing training in the UK he returned to his mother's homeland to study and treat ebola and zika-like viruses as their incidence and spread increased throughour North Africa. In 1994 he met an ex-KGB agent in a bar in Kenya who drunkenly spoke of a clandestine soviet program to weaponise one of the haemorrhagic viruses in a network of secret labs throughout the USSR and eastern europe. He attached little importance to these drunken ravings at the time, until molecular biological techniques advanced to the point that the RNA sequence of the haemorrhagic viruses could be studied. By this time, Mel was the director of his own laboratory in the Democratic Republic of Congo and his molecular studies seemed to show common sequences that could not be explained by natural evolution. After several years of study, he attempted to publish evidence, but was faced with extreme scepticism from the scientific community. Travelling to the ex-USSR and Eastern Europe, they went undercover to try to discover any further evidence of the conspiracy. During this time, he learnt of the civil war in Chenarus and the subsequent outbreak. With the terrible fear that his worst suspicions have been confirmed, he attempted to organise a humanitarian misson to the region. As the world decends into choas, he embarks on a journey to the heartlands of infection to discover the truth. Unfortunately, during the journey, an infected outbreak occurs onboard and Mel is forced to jump ship and swim to shore.....
