Dean Matthews was a journalist before the outbreak. He loved chasing the story and always found great fulfillment in uncovering the truth. When he was in college he wrote for the school paper and did freelance on the side. It was at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where he met the love of his life, Ashley. Eventually Dean graduated with his degree in journalism and got his first gig as a real journalist. After getting the job, he proposed to Ashley and everything was looking great. As he began his career he started paying close attention to anything really intense that might make for a good story. His searching brought his attention to Chernarus and the violence that was happening. After martial law was declared in South Zagoria on May 3rd, 2017, he decided to go there himself. Dean finished his preparations and finally arrived in South Zagoria on July 3rd. He began simply by interviewing the local inhabitants as best he could to get their side of the story rather than what the global media was putting out. The situation in Chernarus quickly deteriorated as violence broke out, and then the infection. He had a hunch that there was something out of the ordinary going on. He's lost contact with his fiance, who didn't come with him, and he holds onto the faint hope that she might still be alive. His mission is twofold: attempt to discover the cause of the outbreak and get that information to those who might be able to do something about it, and escape the island to get back to his fiance.
Dean is a man of conviction and values the truth above most things. His people skills allow him to befriend people quickly which helps with his interview process, but he has a hard time letting people get close enough to really get to know him. As the days go by and he survives day to day he keeps a journal to record his thoughts and the events of each day. Dean often wonders if this memoir, should he live on, might make a decent novel some day.
