"We'll get there, Gypsy, settle down"
The blonde woman leaned over to the passenger seat to reassure the canine with a gentle hand.
She only received a whine in return, and returned her hand to the steering wheel.
The rain battered against the car, the wipers working overtime to keep the windscreen clear enough to see.
She drove carefully, but with haste. It had been a chore to get here in the first place, no one was willing to try to get into Chernarus, but no one had really explained why.
The headlights illuminated a sign, and Riza pulled into the side of the road to study her pocket map.
The large dog at her side pawed her leg, and she again petted her head as she looked through the towns listed on the paper in front of her.
The darkness made it hard to see, and the light in this rented car wasn't exactly the best. Sighing, Riza stooped over the map, holding a small flashlight as she searched.
Footsteps approached, and Riza looked up in time to see a figure approach the car. Her hand instinctively went to the holster at her hip, and Gypsy growled quietly at her side.
The figure slumped against the car with a thud, blood splattering across the driver window.
It groaned and screeched, pulling back to again slam into the vehicle. Gypsy let out a bark, and Riza felt a spike of fear rise in her chest.
Another approached from the front, blocking the headlights as it aggressively clawed at the hood.
Throwing the map into the back seat, Riza grabbed the wheel, knocking the car into reverse and slamming her foot the floor.
Gypsy continued barking at the figures, who seemed uncaring they'd just been unceremoniously dropped to the ground.
They screamed in unison, and Riza drove the car forwards, avoiding hitting either of them but skidding the vehicle in the process.
She sped through town, her heart racing and her mind confused.
Maybe there was a reason she hadn't been able to reach her friend.
Maybe there was a reason everyone was so reluctant to come to Chernarus.
Her thoughts clouded her judgement, the rain and darkness making it difficult to control the vehicle at the speed she was driving. Upon exiting the town, the vehicle hit a pothole in the road, sending it entirely off course.
Skidding along the road, Riza attempted to regain control. Unable to steady the Chernarussian car, it bounced off the road, dropping backwards into a ditch and slamming into a tree.
Riza woke to the low whine of Gypsy beside her. The canine was frantically licking at her face in an attempt to wake her up.
Groaning, Riza lifted a hand, placing it gently on the dog's head.
"I'm okay, girl, I'm fine..."
She climbed out, stumbling in the slick mud and attempting to wipe the blood from her forehead. Gypsy followed close behind, sticking at her master's heels as she reached into the back of the busted car.
Pulling out a backpack, and stuffing the map inside, Riza glanced towards the town.
"Don't think we're going back there... what the hell were those things?"
Looking down at her companion, Riza drew her pistol, and turned towards the forest behind them.
"I guess we are on foot from here, Gypsy"
