1Lt. Lucas Fomenko was a U.S. Marine Corps Helicopter Pilot flying a UH-1Y Venom. He was stationed aboard the USS America (LHA-6) in Rota, Spain. The ship was a part of Task Force 61, the amphibious assault force in Europe and the Mediterranean Sea for the United States Sixth Fleet. His Helicopter crew included 2Lt. Hayden Calhoun his co-pilot and his crew chief Sgt. Davie Nguyen. In June of 2017 Lucas and his helicopter crew deployed to the Green sea where there were reports of an unknown virus. The Commander of the air group gave the order to start patrolling the coastline to get a idea of the situation with the virus. On patrol one day Lucas' helicopter got caught in a huge storm over the region. The interference within the storm destroyed all attempts at radio communication. Lucas headed back out to open water to try to get out of the storm when suddenly the twin engines on the venom gave out and the Helicopter started to plummet towards the sea. Just before impacting the water a huge wave crashed into the helicopter throwing Sgt Nguyen and the other crew member out of the helicopter. Then the helicopter crashed into the water. Lucas fought out of his seat and swam upwards but the fate of his co-pilot 2Lt. Calhoun was not as successful. Lucas turned his clothes into modified life preservers and began to swim towards shore.
