He and his girlfriend bought a house in County Waterford later on in the year and he had been living his life in peace and quiet. Mid 2017 he was notified that he had been selected to return to duty as a reserve to assist with NATO naval operations He was flown out to Virginia, where he boarded the USS Arleigh Burke which was part of a carrier strike group on course to Chernarus. On the night of the 21st of July, a cruise ship collided with a rock formation during a storm. A small group of people from each ship in the strike group was ordered to take RHIB's to the shore to evacuate those stranded from the shipwreck, and Simmons was selected as a part of the group on the USS Arleigh Burke. His group boarded the RHIB and began to make their way to shore, but the storm was too strong and the boat capsized, leaving the group helpless and at the mercy of the ocean. Simmons hit his head on a rock, knocking him unconscious. He awoke on the coast some time later, nobody in sight, only some washed up rowing boats.
