To make sure his family would be safe, Katjas father send them to Kirovograd to be with his sisters family.
He himself planned on taking arms to join the fight against the ChDKZ, despite his wife begging him not to.
The whole family moved to the city, including her brother Filip - at first at least.
One night, Filip left, wanting to join his father in the fight as well.
The rest of the family barely had any contact to Filip or Marek during the war and everyone was devastated when Marek returned home one day
… without his son Filip though.
What happened made Katerina want to help in some way as well.
She knew she’d never be able to take up a gun and actually take a life. And she didn’t want to.
But she wanted to help her country in some way - so she decided to become a doctor.
After the war, the family decided to stay in Kirovograd.
Katja finished school, but instead of studying medicine, she decided to become a nurse first,
finishing her studies when she was 21 years old - one year before the outbreak.
