“We stopped checking for monsters under our bed when we realized they were inside us.”
Mara Devlin come into the world with a tumultuous start, her wails at infancy already showing her disdain for the newfound world around her. Born to a pair of destitute alcoholics who seldom ever held a sober waking moment, Mara was dredged from foster home to foster home after being placed within the system in Georgia due to her parents inability to properly care for her. She struggled for years, unable to grasp any semblance of normalcy and her verbal development suffered for it. In an effort to mitigate further delays, she was taught ASL though being the obstinate child even that was something she used as a last resort, keeping her willingly signed communications pertaining only to her immediate needs. Eventually, after practice in private away from prying eyes, she managed to solidify her verbal communication skills. Despite her less than stellar disposition towards people, she ventured a few times to attempt to tell tales of strange things she would see or here, more often than not disregarded for having a wild imagination. It didn't take long before she gave up entirely, choosing to ignore the intermittent delusions that plagued her mind. When Mara finally reached adulthood and could seek her own medical care she sought help and was, after some time, diagnosed with Schizophreniform disorder.

From then on it was an assault of medications, trying different concoctions that might ease the episodes brought on by her illness, with limited success. The only saving grace was that she could manage to go long periods of time with seeming normalcy, until another episode deigned to hit. In 2015, Mara found herself in an ICU of her local hospital, fighting off a nearly deadly bout of some illness she can't pronounce after a disillusioned episode had her wandering the elements for weeks with no one caring enough to notice. While she mostly recovered, infection had spread through her sinuses, leading to vision impairment by the time she was able to get treatment. Making the best of a bad situation, she opted for colored corrective contact lenses and has kept spares on her ever since.
Work was always a sore subject for Mara given her inability to find an effective medicine regime to offset her episodes. Most jobs saw her fired in under a year, and she ended up redirecting her efforts to more lenient lines of work where she could set her own schedule. Having a mild penchant for art, she started wiling the evening hours away practicing over and over again. Once she felt confident enough in her developing skill, she sought out a tattoo parlor with which to apprentice at. Competition was steep, and much to Mara's expectations, she was turned away time and time again for more "reliable" apprentices. With a roll of her eyes, she looked further beyond her comforts and started attempting to network abroad, desperate to get her foot in the door somewhere. After yet another cascade of applications, and one visa later, Mara found herself apprenticing in a parlor in Norway.

"Good people are like candles; they burn themselves up to give others light"
A random meeting yet you were so nice,
I wonder if that kindness has a price.
To all your friends you're willing to risk harm,
Can't help but wonder if its meant to disarm.
Time will tell if your words ring true,
For now a cautious friend among the few.
Rest easy, Karl. It seems you did pay that price.
Dimes
"I can never thank you enough for showing up. Its not the same without you."
I said not to come.
Now I'll down this rum.
How the tables have turned,
Maybe soon we'll both learn.
Rose
"Because of her, I will not fall. For her, I'd risk it all."
Its become clear now,
but I don't know how...
I'll find you.
That much is true.
Forgive me.
Alex
Memories that I'm trying to hold dear,
Memories of love and fear.
Who am I?
Who is that in your eye?
How much more is there to see?
Is this really a part of me?
I remember.
Is this okay?
