The captain was deployed to Elektrozavodsk from the US fleet that had arrived in the green sea in the weeks following the start of the outbreak. As the third in command in the area, Martinez listened over the radio as chaos started erupting around them. The operation quickly spiralled out of control during the night on the morning of the 18th of July as refugees began swarming the defensive lines on the south of the town, trying to flee south to Chernogorsk. The chaos split the battalion reinforced unit into two, with a large portion of the unit being cut off in the town centre. As the sun started to rise a break in the southern lines caused a dozen infected to stumble into the command post, killing a senior officer and a handful of other marines, the incident destroyed the operability of the unit and marines started retreating inland in smaller squads as refugees and infected started pouring down the coastal highway towards US army defences in Chernogorsk.
Seeing the dire situation the captain started heading inland to regroup with a platoon at a major air base in the North West of the country.
