Born and raised in a large town in the UK, Lance had a fairly standard early life. He had a strong relationship with his family, made above-average grades through high school, and was active with the Catholic church.
It was a surprise to everyone when Lance decided against university, and instead joined the International Rescue Committee, or IRC. The way he saw it, he'd been gifted with an easy start in life, and had the responsibility to help those who didn't. He set out to aid people who were victims of circumstances beyond their control, and in 2008, he shipped out for Chechnya to do just that.
Refugees were fleeing the country to Russia, hoping to escape a brutal separatist revolution. For a year, Lance was a part of a group establishing shelters and aid programs in the south of Russia, in hopes that they could free the refugees of the conflict they'd left behind.
In early 2009, Lance skipped out on a plane home to help with one more group, insisting he'd only need an extra month or two. At the time, conflict between Chernarus and Russia was only increasing, and Lance could only watch as what seemed to be war broke out overnight. In the chaos, he took a plane into Chernarus with a group of fellow humanitarians, hoping to do what they could for the suffering civilians.
It was the decision to get on that plane that trapped Lance Steward in Ground Zero for the Outbreak.
With front-row seats to the events that unfolded in Chernarus, Lance had some time to prepare. He stocked up on supplies from the IRC's dwindling storage, and in a moment he'd look back on disappointedly, left by himself in an attempt to outrun the wave of chaos rapidly approaching.
Lance was unsuccessful in his escape, being stopped at the border by what was left of the scattered military forces. He turned back, facing the wasteland-to-be in front of him.
For the first time in his life, Lance felt uncertain. He had nothing to rely on except himself - and not even the God he'd put so much faith into seemed able to help.
