Born in San Francisco in the early 1990s, Matthew was raised in a region far from war and conflict. He lived a relatively normal life, going through a childhood with no particularly life-altering events, and was relatively successful in school. As a young adult, he attended a small private school in New England where he studied journalism, dreaming of being an on-site reporter and being able to see the world through his profession. Little did he know that accepting an internship with a national news network would change his life so drastically. After taking the job, he was assigned to shadow another reporter who was flying to the Chernarussian-Russian border to report on the military actions taking place between the two countries. When the outbreak happened, the network staff wasn’t quick enough to escape before the airports closed. For the first while, the crew drove a beat up van across western Europe and holed up in some of the checkpoints and secure areas dotting the landscape, but as society fell further and further into disarray, they ran out of options. A disagreement between the group caused them to split, with some headed to the Iberian peninsula, others hoping to find a boat and cross the channel to England, and even others choosing to backtrack and see if things had at all settled down near the Black Sea. Matthew elected to head back to Chernarus with a couple of his crew, hoping to find any ways to get back to America or help from the local military or UN personnel who had helped them in the early days of the plague. As Matthew’s group crossed Takistan towards the border of Chernarus, they were held up by a group of desperate survivors. When one of his crew members tried to defend himself, they were taken hostage. The bandits planned on executing each of them. Matthew was the last to go in the line. After all of his friends had been beheaded, and just before his own untimely demise, a horde of undead besieged the camp. Matthew was able to escape in the chaos and flee across the border, eventually losing the bandits in the woods near the ruins of Belozersk. Now, Matthew has just made it to the province of South Zagoria, hoping to find anything to help him in his survival.
