Cawthorn loves ships, ever since the age of 20 he has worked on one. Employed by a cargo shipping firm, Cawthorn is used to spending weeks, even months at sea. He is skilled at what he does, and enjoys working in a team of engineers to ensure the ship that carries him doesn't sink. He's used to working on a Post-Panamax ship, huge ships that are usually used for transporting cargo through the Panama Canal. With over 10 years of experience on the huge Post-Panamax ship, E.R Kobe, Cawthorn was looking for something new. He managed to land a job working on a new, smaller ship, one that functioned on the other side of the world. In early February of 2017, Cawthorn worked on a cargo vessel that worked a route under Europe, usually trading through Romania. Making use of the Danube-Black Sea Canal and Poarta Albă-Midia Năvodari Canal, the ship would trade through into the Black Sea. He worked the post for a few months without issue, working a smaller ship was just fine for him. That was until late July, in which a terrible storm hit whilst the ship Cawthorn worked at was hit by a heavy storm. The ship veered, her body not fairing well against the storm at all, until the decision was called to try and route the ship through the Black Sea and into the Green Sea.

It was at this point, the engineering team decided it would be better to beach the ship as fast as possible, landing it on the coast of Chernarus to get it away from the storm. What the crew met there was something they could never even imagine. The crew banded together, trying to contact any kind of "home" they could, but no radio signals on Chernarus were responding. Deciding to find their way on foot, most of the crew spread out where they could, whilst Cawthorn stayed with the boat for as long as he could until finally deciding to move off with what resources he could carry. He took to the forest, prepared with as many tools as he could take from the boat, before facing the challenge of Chernarus. The first undead he came across almost got the better of him, after he mistook it for another person. Before it went for him, Cawthorn managed to outmaneuver it and get it away from him which gave him time to truly work out what it was he was up against. For almost 2 years his tools held out for him as he lived a quiet life in the hills. He stayed away from any contact, avoiding any other survivors out in the land.

Staying away from people became routine, until all of his tools eventually ran dry. He had nothing to his name anymore. No way to maintain his rudimentary farms and shelter, or to defend himself. He had to set out and find people, after 2 years of being completely alone. He wasn't even sure how to talk to people anymore, let alone try to set up some form of trade. Hell, all of his time in the cargo houses was bound to help his trade charisma, right?

Being locked away to his own devices for 2 years, Cawthorn had no knowledge of the current political standpoint of the Chernarus wasteland. He knew of no factions or groups that survived out in the lands, since he chose entirely to avoid them. All he wants by now, is to keep on surviving. Perhaps one day, he could return to the 2 year old wreck and maybe bring some life back to it... An idea out of his grasp for now.
