Following the death of her sister, Private First Class Brooke Rowe, Karmen's once upbeat and positive personality faded into an obsessive focus on her art and school. She isolated herself and avoided attachments, placing all her joy into the photographs she took. She didn't have to tell people how she was feeling or make them feel better about her sister's death by accepting their condolences as though it meant anything. She could put on her headphones and disappear into the music while she took pictures of the good things left in the world. Coping wasn't a skill she ever really developed, instead, she practiced avoidance by putting her pain into pretty little boxes and shoving them into the back of her mind to deal with at a later date. Her focus led her into an internship with an independent war photographer on his way to Chernarus.
