Background

Jonathan was raised on a cattle ranch in west Texas along with his two brothers, Newton and Nick. He and the brothers grew used to fending for themselves as their parents never stopped working, and when they did, they almost immediately went to sleep or the bar. The learned crucial skills such as hunting, fishing, and general survival skills as they would camp out together on the property for days on end without coming home. This skillset proved to be useful when the virus first broke out. When news reached the ranch of the atrocities that had been occurring throughout the world they decided to simply stay and fortify the ranch and prepare to be self-sustaining until everything has been resolved. As time passed, people in the city of Amarillo started to hear of the ranch, and how well-fortified of a safe haven it was. It was at that point that people started to try and break into and steal supplies from the ranch, which Jonathan and his brothers were usually able to fend off without the need for any real violence. But inevitably the day came when someone went to the ranch with purely hostile intentions. Tired of seeing the Mathers family thrive, a member of the community came armed and ready to eliminate them and take over their safe have. Despite efforts on Jonathan’s behalf to diffuse the situation, a gunfight ensued, and Jonathan was forced to end the man’s life, marking the first time he ever had to kill somebody. To his surprise, it didn’t make him feel sick, or scared, or remorseful. He was protecting his family, and in his mind, he knew he was justified. Things changed from that moment. Jonathan knew that he would do anything, ANYTHING, to protect his brothers. So, from now on when people came to the ranch with ill intent, they didn’t get the chance to leave. However, this behavior started to reach to wrong ears, specifically an eastern European militant group that just so happened to have a branch in central Texas. They saw the ranch as an opportunity for a new forward operating base, and after hearing that there were only five residents of this ranch they knew that an assault on the property would be easy for them. When they came, Jonathan and his brothers didn’t stand a chance. With what could only be described as a small army, they breached the walls and began pummeling in. Jonathan and his brothers fought until the last bullet, killing over ten of the soldiers each. When the invaders were sure that the brothers were out of ammunition, they rushed them and tied each of them up. After slaughtering their parents in front of them, they decided that if they could break the brothers’ spirits, they would make a wonderful addition to their military. They prepared them for transport to their main operation in Moscow, bringing them to their airfield and loading them up into a stolen cargo plane. The flight was long and harsh, but Jonathan knew that they could do nothing to break their spirits, and that they would have to kill them. As Jonathan was formulating a plan of escape, a thundering boom erupted, and the plane bounced around forcefully. Before he could even begin to panic, Jonathan was knocked unconscious by a flying box thrown by the turbulence. When he awoke, he was on the ground, hurt and disoriented. The rubble of the plane was all around him, most of it ablaze. He stumbled around for a moment attempting to find his brothers to no avail. He did luckily however, within the strewn out cargo find his empty rifle, and most importantly, his hat. He thought to himself, “Where am I? Where are my brothers? What brought this plane down?” Thus beginning his first day in Nyheim.
